Using left/right instead of translate often results in a “jerky” sort of movement. For this promo site, you are absolutely right, but we were “thinking ahead”.

With good old absolute positioning and the transition property you could get the same effect, but with a nice degradation on older browsers: they won’t see the animation but everything else could work like on the modern browser. You could then leave out the IECC also.

They can’t be taken as gospel. In java script the Date.now() which is absent in ie8 is still available in ie9 while in ie8 mode.
